'I Carry Your Heart With Me,' a poem by E.E. Cummings, read by RM.
Okay so since starting a tumblr I see lots of posts about people wanting others to be more respectful and considerate toward the appearance and with the interaction of those with mental illness. Whether discussing that it is about not hurting feelings or using certain terms as slurs and so on. This can be anything from saying you are so OCD, to making fun of people whose behaviors mirror the textbook representation in the DSM.
As a professional in the field, I have education, performed internships, and served as social worker in the state of Arizona - I feel like there is a very slippery slope in this. For those who are currently experiencing mental illness, it in my opinion/professional experience it creates an unrealistic bubble to ask that no one speak of mental illness, and to be sharp with those who not do understand. This mostly causes a dichotomy in response due to my strong advocacy for equality and support of those with mental illness (see NAMi.org for more info) and for my wish for those same people to not let the “illness” (quotes because I do not like that word) to dictate and define them. You are a person first. Be Ashely, be Walter, be Shaquita. And by being you, accepting you, and focusing on you - allow comments of behaviors or appearance to not cause pain or hurt.
It must be known that just as homosexuality was considered a mental illness not too long ago, it is perfectly possible that “bipolar, OCD, etc” will be decided no longer illnesses. In this case, I feel it is everyone’s personal responsibility to be accountable for your actions regardless I your situation. Now before this become misinterpreted, let me clarify that I mean responsible to the best of your ability. To label something is important in my field predominantly for the ease of statistical research and insurance billing purposes. I feel a strong hesitance with those who choose to openly accept their “illness” or as I’d rather put “behaviors” - but become extremely upset when anyone mentions it in a fashion they do not approve.
This may not be a great forum for this type of discussion because I think the demographic of this website is on the younger side and has may be not the time, guidance, or forethought to research and reflect on these concepts prior to responding. However, I think it is important to state, nonetheless. I also welcome constructive and pragmatic responses that furthers the topic.
